How to unlock Your Vehicle
Modern electronic key fobs offer superior convenience and performance to manual keys. However, they require batteries that will eventually degrade over time and will need to be replaced. If your Volvo keyfob works only intermittently, your battery might be failing and you'll need to replace it soon.
Fortunately, there are easy steps you can follow to replace your Volvo key fob battery on your own. First, find a clean work area to carry out the process. Lay out all the tools you'll require. Then, locate the battery's hatch, and turn it open using an open-ended flathead, coin, or other similar tool. Then, carefully remove the battery by lifting the side closest to the hook of the key-ring. Be sure to use rubber gloves to avoid damaging the clips or electronic contact surfaces.
Insert the new battery into the socket once the old one is removed. Make sure the positive side of the battery is facing upwards and that all clips are secured. Then, slide the cover back towards the key-ring loop section until it is loose and then slides off. Then, remove the cover and reveal the mechanical key blade that is hidden within. This will be used to unlock your vehicle from the driver's side door when the battery of your key fob is dead or missing.
How to Start Your Vehicle
Modern vehicles come with keyfobs that do more than simply unlock and lock the doors. They can also perform useful functions such as summoning and auto parking the vehicle. In fact, the newest Volvo XC60 can even remotely start your engine using its key fob buttons. What exactly does it do?
Locate a clean surface on where you can put everything you need for this project. Lay the fob on the surface with the Volvo logo facing up. Make use of a flathead, coin, or any other similar tool to open the battery hatch. Avoid touching the electronic contact surfaces using your tools. This could cause the fob to cease working properly.
Once the hatch is open you can slide the battery into its socket, making sure it is properly seated with the positive (+) side facing up. Once the clips are secured, replace your battery cover, and reassemble your fob.
By pressing the unlock button, you will disengage the alarm and open the driver's door. Pressing it a second time will unlock all doors and the tailgate. The unlock button can also be used to open the windows on a hot day or to let fresh air in before stepping out on the road. If you want more, the keyfob can be used to turn on the ERS which will start the climate control system of your vehicle. It will then warm or cool the vehicle to the desired temperature when the vehicle is parked.
How to Change the Battery
If your key fob isn't locking or unlocking your vehicle as it used to, it may be time to replace the battery. The battery can be changed using a flathead screwdriver plastic pry bar, or other small tools. Locate the small slot that is used to house the backup or emergency key for ignition made of metal. Insert the blade of your screwdriver or pry bar tool into the slot and gently open the rear of the key fob. After you have opened the fob, locate and remove the CR 2032 3V battery. Install a new battery in its place and snap the fob back together.
